Founder & Director, Uzuri Birth | Birth Educator | Doula Trainer | Maternal Health Advocate

Bobette Ngiedi Lelo is a birth professional, educator, and maternal health advocate dedicated to transforming the way women and families experience pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care. She is the founder of Uzuri Birth, a community of doulas and holistic midwives committed to providing compassionate, culturally grounded, and personalized support to women and families.

With more than a decade of experience as a full-spectrum doula and having supported over 250 births across Belgium, Canada, and Ghana, Bobette brings a deeply holistic and culturally responsive approach to her work. Her journey into birth work was shaped by her own experiences of pregnancy and childbirth, as well as her early studies in midwifery in Belgium. These experiences strengthened her conviction that women deserve to feel informed, respected, supported, and empowered throughout their reproductive journeys.

Bobette founded Uzuri Birth in 2014 with the belief that birth support should be personal, collaborative, and centered around the needs and choices of each family. Today, Uzuri Birth has grown into a team of doulas and holistic midwives who work together to provide comprehensive support throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period.

One of the things that makes the Uzuri Birth model unique is that families have a choice in who supports them. When booking services, clients can choose their own midwife and their own doula based on their individual needs, preferences, and connection with the birth worker. Bobette believes that the relationship between a family and their birth team is deeply personal, and that women should have a voice in choosing the people who will accompany them through such an important life experience.

Bobette has focused on building sustainable, community-led approaches to maternal care. Through Uzuri Birth, she provides birth education, doula and postpartum support, holistic training, and community-based doula education designed to equip local people with practical knowledge and skills to serve their own communities.

A strong believer in “each one, teach one,” Bobette is passionate about preserving the wisdom and traditions surrounding birth and ensuring that valuable ancestral knowledge is not lost. Her work brings together traditional wisdom and contemporary birth education, creating spaces where knowledge can be shared across generations.

Bobette's long-term vision is The Birth Haven, a safe, natural, out-of-hospital birthing center in Ghana and accross Africa that will offer women and families a nurturing alternative for maternity care while honoring African traditions and community-based support.

Through her work and the growing Uzuri Birth team, Bobette continues to advocate for reproductive justice, culturally respectful maternity care, community empowerment, and a woman's right to make informed choices about her birth and the people she trusts to support her.
