At Uzuri Birth, our mission is clear and deeply rooted: to ensure that every mother feels supported, respected, and heard throughout her pregnancy journey.
We frequently meet women who aspire to have a safe, out-of-hospital birth—whether in water or on land. Unfortunately, limitations in the current infrastructure, such as frequent power outages and water shortages, often prevent them from having a secure and comfortable home birth. Additionally, some of the mothers we serve require extended postpartum support beyond what is typically available.
Our vision is to create a dedicated Birth Haven—a safe, welcoming space where low-risk pregnant individuals can give birth with dignity and peace of mind. This center would also offer extended postpartum care, providing a sanctuary where mothers and newborns in sensitive or vulnerable situations can stay for up to six months after delivery.
We are actively working in collaboration with Ghanaian authorities and local healthcare facilities to bring this vision to life.
Why
Uzuri Birth’s services are necessary in Ghana because they help address gaps in maternal healthcare,provide emotional and physical support to birthing individuals, and promote positive birthexperiences. While Ghana has made progress in reducing maternal and infant mortality, challengessuch as limited access to quality healthcare, medical staff shortages, and cultural misconceptionsabout childbirth still exist. Organizations like Uzuri Birth are helping to train and integrate doulas intoGhana’s maternal healthcare system, ensuring that more women receive the care they deserve. Manypublic hospitals are overcrowded, and nurses and midwives may not have time to provideindividualized care. Uzuri birth fills this gap by offering personalized attention, helping birthingindividuals feel supported and heard. Ghana has a history of traditional birth attendants (TBAs)assisting in births, but many TBAs lack formal training in modern maternal care. Doulas, who aretrained in both traditional and evidence-based practices, can complement medical care whilepreserving cultural birthing traditions.
Many pregnant individuals are not fully informed about their rights, birth options, and medicalprocedures. Uzuri Birth educates mothers on safe birthing practices, breastfeeding, postpartumrecovery, and newborn care, ensuring they can make informed decisions.Postnatal care is often overlooked in Ghana, leaving many mothers without guidance on recovery,mental health, and newborn care.By offering emotional and physical support, doulas allow midwives and doctors to focus on medicalcare.
Where
Uzuri Births provides physical support services in Accra, Ghana, and Montreal, Canada. Additionally,
we offer online prenatal classes and birth support globally in French, English, and Dutch.
How
Uzuri Birth is helping pregnant women by providing holistic, culturally sensitive, and personalized
maternal care. Their services aim to empower women through education, emotional and physical
support, and advocacy, ensuring safer and more positive birth experiences.
We do this in different ways: During our prenatal classes we educate mothers on pregnancy, labor,
birth options, and postpartum recovery while also providing guidance on nutrition, breastfeeding, and
newborn care. We equally offer training to those interesting in becoming a doula.
We offer continuous emotional and physical support during labor and help women navigate hospital,
and home births. We ensure pregnant women understand their rights and medical choices.
We support new mothers with breastfeeding assistance and newborn care guidance and we offer
emotional support to prevent postpartum depression and anxiety.
We collaborate with local hospitals, midwives, and gynecologists to improve maternal care, we offer
services to low-income women in Ghana, ensuring access to quality support and we bridge the gap
between traditional birth practices and modern maternal healthcare.
We provide support that respects cultural beliefs and traditions, we help Black women and women of
color receive affirming and empowering birth experiences and we address issues of medical bias,
systemic healthcare challenges, and racial disparities.
We plan on building a space where women who wish to have a home birth can come and have access
to a space with water, electricity and professional support during their labor, birth and post partum.
